Final Fantasy XI - Arashi Linkshell

Transworld Project

Welcome! This is my little project... well, it's more of a tribute than anything. A tribute to the beauty of Vana'diel. ^^

Unfortunately, you have to be fairly familiar with the game, Final Fantasy XI, to fully appreciate what I've tried to do... but I know there are a lot of devoted fans of the game... or rather, citizens of Vana'diel... that will be able to recognize these zones and smile. If I've accomplished that then I'm happy.

A lot of people have expressed interest in getting higher resolution images than what has been posted here. Unfortunately, many of the source images I get don't come much larger than what you see here. There are a few exceptions, and those I've posted links to under the image.

This was one of my first attempts, and one that turned out the best. I chose this image right away because when I saw the rock formation, it reminded me of an Uraganite... heh, don't ask me why. I believe the image is a shot taken from coastal Japan.

I left the FFXI logo off of this one because it really intruded on the image as a whole. Some people have had a problem about the scale of Tiamat compared to her surroundings, but I like how she seems dwarfed by the mountains. It puts into perspective how small she is compared to the world... and in turn, how small we are compared to her! The image is taken from the Grand Canyons.

This was a difficult image to work with because of the lighting and the volumetric lighting. It took several iterations to get it looking decent... still not 100% there but I'm happy with it now.

This is one of my favorites and one that always makes me smile. I believe the image is taken from California.

Another tough one to work with. It's difficult working with lighting on snow because of the reflection off the snow itself. The lack of footprints also diminishes the pic a bit. I did manage to add some breath though.

I have to thank a member of KI for posting this pic for me to work with. It's perfect, and I think the tonberries blend in nicely. This is an image of the Lumanai Mayan Ruins.

I, like many ppl, have spent countless hours in the Dunes, so this image holds special meaning to me. The trees are a bit wrong, but I can totally picture an exp pt fighting to the left...

This is probably my favorite of all. It was difficult getting the shadow of the raptor the right color and angle... but I love how it turned out... sans footprints and all.

My first attempt at incorporating a player model. The direction of the light source was very difficult to pickout of this image. I like how the color of this one differs from the rest of the images though.

I probably redid this image more than any other. It was so hard to get the lighting correct, but I think it turned out right.

I did a motion blur version of this image that made it very dramatic. However, it took away from the overall quality of the image so I left it off. I still imagine her soaring down at you though...

This scene is so perfect... I can just imagine the zoneline around the corner there... ^^

The volume of the light made this one hard to do... I dunno, at first glance it doesn't look right, but if I look at it more it does look right. Anyone catch the rarab? ^^

I'm not sure this background image is a real place... but when I saw it I instantly thought of Riverne. It's such a pretty image I couldn't resist.

This image was somewhat restrictive in terms of what I could do with Vrtra. It turned out really as more of a mood image. The only thing is, I don't think there's any water in KRT... I hope that the coolness factor of the image makes that forgivable though. ^^

I was planning on a whole party, but it got too cluttered.

I really wanted to do one of Zi'tah, but I couldn't find a very good image to use. The Golem texture is also very pronounced with drawn in shading and highlights, so it is hard to match it up with the background. Overall I'm not too happy with this one, but I did the best I could.

This scene is perfect with the rocks. No touching!

This one doesn't really fit into the project since there are no underwater zones in FFXI.... but I thought it'd be funny to make. m(_ _)m Please forgive this tangent. yurushite kudasai.

I contemplated putting a spider there, but they're so nasty. >P

I grew up in Bastok, so I tried to remember what it was about Gustaberg that makes it so nostalgic... The answer, being a noob and zoning a train. ^^;

It's difficult to find good images to match Zi'tah. I liked this one because the blurred background allowed me to put the focus on the leech, while still having the golem in the image... looming in the background.

Nothing too special about this one. It's a very nice scene, but it doesn't particularly match the zone that well.

I'll remain silent on this one on the grounds that it may incriminate me.

Inspired by the recent Chocobo raising patch...

I thought this background suited its corresponding ToAU area very well, although the solidified lava is more black than the rock like texture of the zone. It does however, overlook the ocean.

Ceri of Odin wanted me to use this image, but I didn't really think it matched a zone very well... So I figured that the dark rider would be a good link in, since he wanders many zones. It is a really nice image though...

The original image for this was a bit blurry... it's hard finding images to match the new areas though.

The theme of this image is facing the challenges of Vana'diel... having the strength and courage to go do what needs to be done... and having the friendship and companionship to do so.
